Last year (as some of you may already know) I had the great privilege of spending a week in north east Arnhem Land with the Yolngu people who live on their ancestral country (homelands) in this remote and stunning area of northern Australia.
I've also just recently had the privilege to have been able to share some of my images and words used in a story written by writer - Krysia Bonkowski with a wider audience in a beautiful 9 page photo essay (and cover) in this months October 2017 Jetstar Australia Magazine.
My time in Arnhem Land was the start of what I hope will be an ongoing journey to learning more about my own country's first peoples and to achieving a greater understanding of their rich and layered culture. To have been welcomed so warmly and generously was touching and to witness a people still so connected to their county, to the well being of it and to their family, ancestors and traditions was heart warming.
Being with the Yolngu people as well as others that I met on this trip has ignited a desire to learn more about Australia's ancient history, not only through reading and traveling but also in reaching out to the very people who hold the beauty of their stories within and who are so willing and happy to share them with anyone who is interested....no doubt we have a lot to learn from them.
Thank you to those at Hardie Grant Publishing and Jetstar Australia Magazine for making this photo essay happen and for making it look so gorgeous. And thank you to all the Yolngu people who feature in these pics (and others) for allowing me to photograph you so freely and for your generosity of spirit.
“Travel has a way of stretching the mind. The stretch comes not from travel’s immediate rewards, the inevitable myriad new sights, smells and sounds, but with experiencing firsthand how others do differently what we believed to be the right and only way.” – Ralph Crawshaw
